Biomass and nutrient distribution in pure and mixed stands of Liquidambar styraciflua L. and Pinus caribaea var. hondurensis Bar. Et Golf.
Resumé en anglais
Due to its good adaptability to Brazilian tropical regions, the Pinus caribaea var. hondurensis has been the most utilized pine species for reforestation. Although the Liquidambar styraciflua L. is originally from subtropical regions, it has revealed to be promising in tropical regions. Its good growth along with its large biomass production are important features for the interest that this hardwood has raised. The lack of research work relating to the influence of the establishment of mixed stands motivated this work. The aim of this research was to analyze the silvicultural characteristics of the species in pure and mixed stands, as well as the production, distribution and concentration of nutrients in tree biomass. This research was developed in the region of Agudos, State of São Paulo, utilizing pure and mixed plots of Liquidambar styraciflua and Pinus caribaea var. hondurensis established in October, 1973, without fertilization, in a 2.0 x 2.5 m spacings in an area of 3,600 m2, with six 20 x 30 m plots of one handred and twenty trees of which fourty eight centrally located were used for analysis. The stands were analysed 10 years old. The dendrometric characteristics were evaluated and samples of wood, bark, branch and leaf were collected from fifteen trees from each species in each treatment. Later, the best equations were established for estimating the biomass of each tree component, nutrient concentration and content, index of nutrient utilization efficiency and the leaf area index. Results obtained revealed that the total biomass produced in pure plots of Liquidambar (127,2 t/ha) and Pinus (133,7 t/ha) is lower than the total biomass produced by the trees in mixed plots (143,5 t/ha). However, in the latter, 114,1 t/ha was produced by the Liquidambar trees. The biomass of L. styraciflua growing in pure stands stored the following macronutrient contents per hectare: 241 Kg of N, 17 Kg of P, 145 Kg of K, 158 Kg of Ca and 51 Kg of Mg. The biomass of Pinus in pure stands accumulated 350 Kg of N, 19 Kg of P, 135 Kg of K, 107 Kg of Ca and 35 Kg of Mg per hectare and the mixed stand of Liquidambar with Pinus, accumulated 243 Kg of N, 17 Kg of P, 160 Kg of K, 171 Kg of Ca and 52 Kg of Mg per hectare. The tree crowns had higher nutrient content than other tree components, varying from 32 70 61% of the total nutrients contained in the biomass. The nutrients in the Liquidambar trees were concentrated in a decreasing order: leaves > bark > branches > wood. In the Pinus trees, the concentration order was leaves > branches > bark > wood. In general, the mixed stand did not affect the macronutrient concentration in the Liquidambar trees. In the Pinus trees, the mixed stand significantly affected the concentration of the nutrients P, Ca, and Mg in the bark an Mg in the stems. The leaf area index for the Liquidambar and Pinus trees in pure stands where 3.2 and 12.5 m2/m2, respectively, and in the mixed stands, these same trees presented indexes of 4.0 and 1.4 m2/m2, revealing that the Pinus trees were dominated by the Liquidambar trees. In general, the Pinus trees presented a more efficient utilization of nutrients than the Liquidambar trees.
