Water and fertilization on trickle irrigated sweet pepper (Capsicum annuum L)
Abstract in English
A field experiment was conducted to study the effects of water depth and foliar fertilization on sweet pepper irrigated by a trickle line source system. The trial was laid out in randomized block design, with split plots, consisting of five treatments, three sub treatments and four replications. The treatments were irrigation depths corresponding to 0, 1/3, 2/3, 1 and 2 times the evapotranspiration. The sub treatments were: A1 - Weekly applications of a 15-9-6 (N-P-K) formulation, at 0,3%, for all the crop cycle. A2 - Weekly applications of a 15-9-6 (N-P-K) formulation, at 0,3%, until the flowering, followed by weekly applications of a 9-15-6 (N-P-K) formulation, at 0,3% until the harvesting. A3 - Weekly applications of a 9-15-6 (N-P-K) formulation at 0,3%, until the flowering, followed by weekly applications of a 15-9-6 (N-P-K) formulation, at 0,3% until the harvesting. The plant height, the steam diameter and cup diameter were determined during the fenologic cycle. The yield, the number of fruits per hectare and the mean weight of the fruits were determined during the harvest period. The statistical analises shows significant differences at 1% level between water depths for all studied parameters, with the exception for the mean weight of the fruits. None of the studied parameters were affected by the foliar fertilization, showing that foliar fertilization alone does not substitutes traditional soil fertilization with macronutrients. A quadratic relationship between irrigation depth and yield was observed. The occurrence of greater yields were obtained with water depths smaller than the correspondent calculed evapotranspiration (ET), indicating that the crop coefficient values (Kc) given by literature are greater than the real which must be around 0,8, for the experimental conditions. Another explanation is like to be the greather development of the root system, due to favorable soil aeration. The continuous variable design using a line source sprinkler system adapted to a trickle line source system was shown to be a simple method, allowing a accurate control of the water depth and making possible the use of water treatments in a randon fashion.
