RIO GURUTUBA-MG
Title in English
Evaluation of the hydric potential of Gorutuba River (MG)
Abstract in English
The work was carried out at the Gorutuba River valley, State of Minas Gerais, a semi-arid region with high concentration of irrigation projects and limited water availability. The objective was the development of a methodology to help users to adopt an operational management which is compatible with the limitations of the region. This study emerged with the increasing number of conflicts related to water use in the area and had emphasis on the improvement of irrigation viability. The working steps were: characterization of the region (climate, soils, hydrology); listing of existing irrigation projects using direct field information and TM/LANDSAT satellite images; hydrometry studies of the river at five flow measurement stations; annual agricultural planning regarding representative annual crops wich are traditionally cultivated in the region; development of the management program taking into account the water demand of each sector, the employed irrigation system, the agricultural season and the type of crop. A comparative analysis of minimum flow values and maximum water demand of the crops was also made. In conclusion: the application of the method is practicable; it's necessary urgently to regulate the water use in the Gorutuba River, through management, basead on the operational agricultural planning.
