MANEJO DA ÁGUA

The irrigation deficit as strategy of water management in bean (Phaseolus vulgaris, L.) crop
Abstract in English
This work was carried out in Guaira, North State of São Paulo, Brazil (20°27’37” S, 48°19’30” W, 495 m). At this moment there are about 200 center pivots functioning in the region that consume, during 240000 hours per year, an equivalent power of 19.36.106 kW and an amount of 4.48.107 m3 of water mainly in the crops of maize, bean and soybean. In order to devise an irrigation water management strategy that provided a decrease in the water and energy consumption, the following objectives were planned: a) determination of an economical alternative of water management in bean irrigated by sprinklers, b) knowledge of bean water needs (Etm) and Eta) for treatments without and with 50% water deficit, c) knowledge of soil water depletion levels in different crop development stages and their relationships with the bean yield, and d) determination of water losses below the depths of 0,25 m and 0,45 m, in different crop development stages. The bean crop was established in 2.0 m by 5.4 m plots in a randomized complete blocks design containing 6 treatments (OOOO, OIII, IOII, IIOI, IIIO and IIII) with four replications. For plants of treatment IIII there is no water deficit in any of the four selected development stages. The plants of treatment OOOO were irrigated with deficit in the four stages, In the treatments OIII, IOII, IIOI and IIIO only during one development stage water stress was allowed. The four development stages that were selected are: stage 1 : vegetative period (Vo to R5), stage 2 : flowering period (R6 to R7), stage 3 : yield formation (R8) and stage 4 : ripening (R9). According to the obtained results, it could be concluded that the irrigation deficit is recommended only during the ripening period, provided that one kilogram of bean grain be paid to the farm in a price equal or lesser R$ 0,46 (forty six cents of real) and the irrigation water cost be equal or greater R$ 75,00/1000 m3. The maximum evapotranspiration values for each of the four development stages whithout deficit were: 1.9 mm, 6.0 mm, 4.0 mm and 5.7 mm; in treatment with deficit in all stages they were: 1.7 mm, 2.6 mm, 2.6 mm and 3.0 mm. The mean values of available soil-water in treatments with irrigation deficit in stages 1, 2, 3 and 4 were 35%, 41%, 39% and 44%, respectively. In the treatment with no deficit in any of the stages, the available soil water mean value for the entire cycle of the crop was 52%; in the treatment with deficit in all stages this value was 36%. In all treatments, from the flowering stage, the internal drainage was not significant below the depth of 0.45 m, that suggests no economical loss of irrigation water. Besides, it was possible to prove that the decrease of yield as a function of applied deficits in each of the four development stages changes from 1.1% (R9) to 13.2% (R8). A relative irrigation deficit value of 15.2% applied during the yield formation period (R8) induced a decrease of 27% in the evapotranspiration and a decrease of 13.2% in the grain yield.
