Influence of substrate nature on the micropropagated strawberry (Fragaria x ananassa, Duch) plants during the "pre-field adaptation phase"
Abstract in English
This research work was conducted in order to contribute to understand how the substrate influence in the physiological processes of micropropagated strawberry (Fragaria x ananassa, Duch), cvs. Sequoia and Guarani, during the "pre-field adaptation phase", which is the intervall between the aclimatation and the planting of the mother plants in the field. The experiment was installed under plastic tunel, using 0,5 1 plastic bags filled with one of the three following substrates: "humus" (processed animal manure plus earth worms); "comercial" (peat); "compost" (animal manure plus plant residues). Plant material (leaves and roots were been harvested at 15 days intervall, during 45 days (4 periods). The following parameters were measured: leaves fresh (MFF) and dry wt (MSF); root fresh (MFR) and dry wt (MSR); leaves (COMF) and roots (COMR) lenghts; number of totaly expanded leaves (NDF); and the nutrients N, P, K, Ca, Mg in the leaves and in the roots (dry wt). The results were analysed statistically and interpreted. The substrate which gave better leave and root growth was the “compost” due to its high base saturation (V% = 95%), ph value ca. 7.0 and high nutrient levels. The substrate "comercial" gave the least plant development (pH value ca. 5.5 and V 75%). The better performance of both cultivars was detected in the intervall between the 3rd and the 4rd periods of harvesting. Root system was well developed in cv. Sequoia while cv. Guarani showed better shoot system. Being a less demanding cultivar for nutrients the latter did not show any difference among the three substrates. Starch level increased during the "pre-field adaptation phase" in the leaves but a decrease was observed in the roots along the experiment. There were positive correlations among the 'parameters: MFF, MFR, MSF, MSR, COMF, COMR and NDF. The most significant negative correlations were among vegetative growth, foliar magnesium (MgF), calcium (CaF) and nitrogen (NF) in cv. Guarani. In both cvs. Guarani and Sequoia the positive correlations occurred in foliar calcium (CaF), magnesium (MgF) and phosphorus (PF). In general the levels of N, P and K increase up to the 3rd period of harvesting then decreasing subsequently down due mainly to a dilution effect (intensive growth) and also to depletion of the substrate in these nutrients. Calcium and magnesium showed a tendency to decrease maybe due to the intensive growth of the plant material. Cultivar Guarani showed a profuse growth even in the final period when the N, P, and Mg levels decreased while K and Ca increased, which could lead to an enhancement of the turgescence and acceleration of the fresh matter in comparison to the dry matter. Depending upon the available time to conducted the "pre-field adaptation phase" a given substrate can be chosen which determines high or low growth intensity in the strawberry crop. The present results showed that the substrate used can be classified following the decreasing order for practical suggestion: "compost", "humus" and "comercial".
