Chemical thinning of ponkanmandarin (Citrus reticulata Blanco) by the use of plant regulators: physiological and technological aspects.
Abstract in English
This research was carried out in 1997/98, under field conditions, in a ten years old commercial orchard of Ponkan mandarin ((Citrus reticulata Blanco) grafted on Poncirus trifoliata. The treatments applied after the June drop by foliar spraying in all tree were: control (water spraying); manual thinning; 1-naphthaleneacetic acid (NAA) at 50, 100, 200 mg.l -1) ; 2- chloroethyl-phosphonic acid (ethephon) at 150, 200, 250 mg.l-1; ethyl 5- chloro -1H -3- indazolyl -acetate (Figaron) at 25, 50, 100 mg.l-1 and carbaryl (Sevin) at 500, 1000, 2000 mg.l-1. Two experiments were carried out to evaluate the action of plant regulators as chemical thinners in Ponkan mandarin, verifying also the fruit influence on the partitioning of carbohydrates and the interaction between plant regulators and nutrient accumulation on leaves. ln the first experiment were realized measures of the mean number of shoots, mean length of shoots and number of set fruits at 0,69 and 140 days after the application (DAA). At harvest were measured the number of box per tree, total number and weight of fruits per box, fruit size, weight of juice, total soluble solids (TSS), acidity (A), ratio (TSS/A) and pH. In the second one it was measured the mineral composition in foliar samples took at February and June/1998 in the four branches marked in diagonal per each tree for determinations. ln the first experiment, the plant regulators did not alter the vegetative growth. The reduction in the number of fruits was promoted by ethephon (all the concentrations tested) and Figaron (25 mg.l-1) at 69 and 140 DAA; and the best thinning effect was obtained with the treatment with ethephon (mean reduction of 63,27% in the number of fruits). There was no correlation between concentration improvement and percentage of thinning; and the significative diameter increment was independent of a bigger fruit thinning, for all the compounds tested. The juice quality was not altered by the application of plant regulators. ln the second experiment, it was verificated the relation between plant regulators and some nutrients. At 211 DAA, this action was positive in relation to potassium levels (ethephon 200 mg.l-1) and copper (carbaryl treatments); and a negative action was verificated in relation to calcium levels (carbaryl 200 mg.l-1, manganese (NAA 50mg.l-1, ethephon 200 mg.l-1, Figaron 25 and 100 mg.l-1, carbaryl 500 and 2000 mg.l-1) and iron (NAA 100 mg.l-1 and Figaron 25 mg.l-1). The reduction in fruit -sink demand after removal of fruits did not lead to higher levels of carbohydrates in the inflorescence leaves, suggesting that the excess of photosynthate is probably partitioned to other sinks. The treatment with carbaryl 1000 mg.l-1 decreased the sugar concentration in treated plants.
