Abstract in English
The paper ?Labor Union and Rural Reality? written by Ana Elizabeth Perruci do Amaral under the guidance of Professor José Albertino Rosário Rodrigues analyzes the social and political performance of the Rural Labor Union concerning labor relations in the sugar cane agriculture of Pernambuco?s Zona da Mata Sul. The analysis runs throughout the seventies to march, 1980. It was made under a sociological outlook, based in a study of a rural labor union and of the organization of salaried labor. Data from recorded interviews of rural workers, and of the labor union leaders were used as well as researched data gathered from the union meeting records, reports and the organization juridical department opinion. Data was also gathered from direct investigation of actions performed by the union leadership and by salaried workers. Through the method used which approaches the Case Study Method, the research was based on the idea that this syndical organization has an actuation at labor relations level and performs a political activity concerning the power system control. The study tried to describe the labor organization, verify the salaried workers claims and their fulfilments through the union, and so verify the workers participation at the union level and show this worker?s view concerning the union. Following the aims at the syndical performance of the sugar plantation workers, their organization and participation within the union are handicapped due to the high diversification of working conditions and also that the workers are perfectly aware of the fact. This high diversification generates conflict among them and also helps their diversion. The hierarchy within the working organization, where there are salaried workers controlling the labor force and those who perform the tasks leads to a seclusion of the categories. The formal difference clandestinos, clandestinos-moradores and fichados according to the way they are registered in their professional card leads to a division in the labor force strict sense. The categories live their working relations differently and have different claims which becomes a handicap to the union performance in the developing of a same project as well as to the worker?s effective participation within the organization. The union performance is different according to the characteristics of each category. Difficulties concerning participation are also due to the fears caused by the repression after 1964. A higher level of association among workers was observed in the late 70? as well as the political strengthening of the Rural Labor Union resulting from the labor convention of 1979 after the mobilization s and the arregimentation which occurred in the second half of the 70?s the rural worker becomes also aware of this strengthening and feels the union mainly as an assistance organization and as an organization for claiming rights in a second plan. These conclusions may contribute to further studies on labor union performance and especially on the recent tendencies of this performance. (*) The Author exerted her right of not mentioning the local and the union researched.
