Baits attractiveness to the subterranean termite Heterotermes tenuis (Hagen,1858) (Isoptera: Rhinotermitidae) in field conditions.

Abstract in English
The attractiveness of seventeen products with high cellulose content to the subterranean termite Heteroterme tsenuis (H.,1858), an importam sugarcane pest in Brazil, was studied in field conditions. In the first phase, colonies of the insect were localized in the field and from seventeen products used as baits seven were selected as more attractive, by applying a scale from zero to the three to collected insects feeding in the baits. In the second phase, the seven more attractive products were added to corrugated fiberboard (TermitrapR) baits and compared with (TermitrapR), taken a pattem. In this phase TermitrapR baits plus the tested products besides showing increasing attractiveness, provided protection and shelter for termites, so that afier a week in the field, part of the coIonies were found Iivingin the baits. In a third phase, in order to have no doubt the attractiveness of the products, the same baits used in the former phase were aggregated in bundle and pIaced in the termite focus. AlI baits were highly attractive, differing only in the total of collected insects per bait. In the fourth phase, five treatmems that had received the highest population notes, in the former phase, were aggregated in two kind of bundles: with and without plastic cover . Both bundles were put together iin the field on the same poim to collect termites. From evaluations long one year it was observed higher termite populations in the baits without plastic cover, the most attractive products, added to the pattem bait, were grounded maize; dry and fresh cowdung; sugarcane bagasse "in nature "; cellulose leaf and a pattem bait (TermitrapR) and the Autumn, was the season the year with the higtest population subterranean termites Heteroterrmes tenuis in sugarcane.
