Production of Nomuraea rileyi (Farlow) Samson e Beauveria bassiana (Bals.) Vuill. utilizing culture media made with pupae of the silkworm Bombyx mori L., 1758.
Abstract in English
The objective of this study was to develop an efficient and economic medium for the production of Nomuraea rileyi and Beauveria bassiana. Media with a base of Bombyx mori pupae were prepared with agar in a solid process and also in a two-phase process in which the mycelia were produced in liquid and the spores in a solid medium. The virulences of the fungi produced in these media were compared with the virulences of the spores produced in the media commonly utilized for these entomopathogens (SMAY and PDA). For N. rileyi , the largest production of the conidia was obtained in SMAY (1 x 1012 conidia/liter of medium). The medium with pupae and potato (FCBA) was the most economical. In this medium the formation of spores was faster and therefore the production cost was 2.3 times less than in SMAY. In the two-phase process, the largest production of N. rileyi , spores was observed in the potato medium (Bat). However, the FCBA was shown to be the most economical for production of conidia and the most productive in terms of mycelial mass (5.4mgml). For B. bassiana, the most spore were produced in the solid process with PDA, costing less than one-half of the production cost with FCBA. In the two-phase process, the pupae medium (FC) was more productive than the PDA medium, being 127.8 time more economical. The production of dry mycelial mass of B. bassiana in liquid culture was larger in the pupa medium (1064 mg mI). The virulence of N. rileyi was not affected when praduced in different culture media. However, B. bassiana spores produced in FCBA solid process and in the FC two-phase process were more virulent in bioassays with Solenopsis saevissima and Diatraea saccharalis.
