Biological aspects and non-preference for feeding and oviposition of Ascia monuste orseis (Godart, 1819) (Lep., Pieridae) on cultivar of collard (Brassica oleracea L. var. acephala DC.)
Abstract in English
This research deals with the effect of 15 cultivars of collard on the development and longevity of Ascia monuste orseis (Godart, 1819). The non-preference of the insect for feeding (with and without free chance of choice) and for oviposition (with free chance of choice) were evaluated on the three less suitable and the three more suitable genotypes for the insect development. Excepting for the non-preference test for oviposition, wich was carried out in the greenhouse, the other experiments were set in the Laboratory of Plant Resistance to Insects, Department of Entomology, “Escola Superior de Agricultura Luiz de Queiroz”, University of São Paylo, in Piracicaba, State of São Paulo, Brazil. The effect of the cultivars tested was observed on the lenght of the larval phase, the viability of the larval and pupal phases and the weight of 8-day old larvae. The duration of the pupal phase, the weight of pupae and the longevity of adults were not affected by the genotypes used to feed the larvae. The male pupae were heavier than the female ones. The three less suitable cultivars for the insect development were Manteiga Tupi, Roxa Monte Alegre and Verde Escura, while 'Crespa 918', 'Crespa Capão Bonito' and 'Manteiga 916' were the more suitable ones. No significant differences were observed among the genotypes as to the feeding preference of the first and fourth instars larvae, and as well as preference for oviposition. The cultivars did affect the feeding preference of the fifth instar larvae, being 'Crespa Capão Bonito', generally speaking, the less preferred one.
