Aspects of the biology of Archytas incertus (Macquart, 1851) (Diptera-Tachinidae) and its interelationships with Spodoptera frugiperda (J.E. Smith, 1797) (Lepidoptera-Noctuidae)
Abstract in English
The objective of the present research was to develop a method of producing Archytas incertus (Macquart, 1851), under laboratory conditions, to understand some aspects of the biology of this parasitoid and its interelationships with Spodoptera frugiperda (J.E. Smith, 1797) with the aim of providing information concerning its potential for use in biological control programs. The adults of the colony of A. incertus were maintained in the Biology Laboratory of the Entomology Department of ESALQ / USP (Temperature 25 ± 2°C, relative humidity 70 ± 10%, no control lighting), while the immature forms were maintained in growth chambers at o 25°C, using S. frugiperda as host. The maintenance of the colony of S. frugiperda was according to the methodology described by FERRAZ (1982) using an artificial diet. The ontogeny and viability of A. incertus were studied after the "inoculation" of the parasitoids of the 3rd to 6th larval instars of S. frugiperda. It was observed that the 4th and 5th larval instars of the host were load (between 1 and 3 larvas for caterpillar) was determined for these instars in order to maximize the total region of inoculation of the parasitoid (abdomen and pronoto) on the host, on the duration of the life cycle and the viability of the parasite was studied. The utilization of 2 larvae per caterpillar at the 5th instar of S. frugiperda resulted in the greatest number of adult parasites, while the region of inoculation of A. incertus on the body of the host (abdomen or pronoto) did not affect the biological parameters evaluated. These trials were conducted using a climactic chamber (at 25°C, relative humidity 70 ± 10% and 14 hours of photophase). The ontogeny of A. incertus was studied at 6 different temperatures (18, 20, 22, 25, 30 and 32°C) utilizing controlled temperature chambers, with the aim of determining the temperature limit (base temperature) and the thermal constant for the different phases of development of this parasitoid, including the verification of the optimal conditions for the production of the parasitoid. The results of this study provided further details concerning the most favorable growth conditions for A. incertus. A temperature of 25°C was the most favorable for the development of A. incertus, and temperature also influenced the longevity of the males and females differently. It was observed that the quantity of energy necessary for the development of the females of A. incertus was a little greater than for the males, which explains the interval observed between the emergence of the two sexes. The survival curves recorded for the adults of A. incertus under laboratory conditions or at constant temperature followed the mathematical model proposed by the distribution of Weibull. Males and females of A. incertus copulated only under sun light, and this stimulus was also necessary for larviposition. The female parasitoids layed larvae even in the absence of kairomones and on average produced 1,392.28 per female. After the 4th to 5th generations in the laboratory, A. incertus shown on unexpected deviation in the sex ratio, resulting in an increase in the number of females. The development of A. incertus under laboratory conditions showed a close synchronization with that of S. frugiperda.
