Title in English
Effect of Lycopersicon spp. genotypes and aqueous extracts of Trichilia pallida Swartz (Meliaceae) on Tuta absoluta (Meyrick, 1917) (Lep., Gelechiidae)
Abstract in English
This study evaluated, under laboratory conditions, the effect of aqueous extracts of Trichilia pallida leaves and twigs, at 0.1, 1.0 and 5% concentration levels, impregnated on tomato leaves, on the development and oviposition of Tuta absoluta. The effect of different tomato genotypes (L. esculentum cv. Santa Clara, Stevens and IPA-5; L. hirsutum f. glabratum PI 134417 and L. peruvianum LA 444-1) on insect biology and oviposition was also tested. Based on these evaluations, the associated effect of resistant genotypes and extracts of the insecticidal plant on T. absoluta was determined. The results showed that leaf and twig extracts affect insect development mainly at the larval stage. Leaf extract presented higher activity than twig extract. No ovicidal activity was detected with T. pallida leaf extract but oviposition was reduced on treated leaves, depending on insect population density. Among all evaluated genotypes, the least adequate to the insect was LA 444-1. It prolonged larval and pupal stages and it reduced larval viability, pupal weight, fecundity and longevity of non mated adults, when compared to the control ('Santa Clara'). The genotype PI 134417 increased the length of larval and pupal stages and reduced female pupae weight. Among cultivated tomato genotypes, the worst insect development occurred on cv. IPA-5. In this case, there was an increase in the length of larval and pupal stages and reductions of larval viability and weight of male pupae. 'Stevens' was the only genotype which did not affect insect development when compared to control. Oviposition of T. absoluta was lower on wild tomatoes (PI 134417 and LA 444-1) than on cultivated genotypes, in free choice tests. Non-preference to oviposition was only detected on the genotype PI 134417, in a no choice test. No associated effect of tomato resistant genotypes and T. pallida aqueous extracts on T. absoluta was found.
