Phyllocnistis citrella Stainton , 1856 (Lepidoptera : Gracillariidae) : bioecology and relation to citrus canker
Abstract in English
This research was carried out to study biological aspects of the citrus leafminer, Phyllocnistis citrella Stainton, 1856 in different temperatures and relative humidities, as well as to evaluate its association with the citrus canker bacteria, Xanthomonas axonopodis pv citri, in order to obtain basic information for management programs for the citrus leafminer in different citrus regions of the state of São Paulo, Brazil. The research related to P. citrella, bioecology was developed in laboratory and greenhouse of the Department of “Entomologia, Fitopatologia and Zoologia Agrícola”, University of São Paulo, in Piracicaba, State of São Paulo. The rearing methodology was designed by the authors and proved to be extremely suitable for the purposes of this research. The best temperature conditions for P. citrella were 25, 30 and 32 o C for egg laying, embrionary development and larval and pupal stages, development, respectively. Based on the insect thermal requirements, a variation of 12.1 to 14.1 generations from September to April (sprouting period) in representative citrus regions of São Paulo State was observed. The temperature combinations used during the development of P. citrella immature and adult stages, did not affect its fertility, while the relative humidity of 70% was the most suitable for the insect. The citrus leaf miner preferred to lay eggs on the abaxial surface and on the main nervure of citrus leaf measuring 0.6 to 2.0 cm length. Most of the eggs were laid on the apical third and on the leaf area middle portion. It was evident that there is a close relationship between the injuries on the leaves made by P. citrella and the infection caused by citrus canker bacteria, X. anoxopodis pv citri
