lnteracion between the fungos Beauveria bassiana (Bals.) Vuill and the larval parasitoids of the sugarcane borer Diatraea saccharalis (Fabr., 1794)
Abstract in English
The present research deals with the influence of Beauveria bassiana (Hyphomycetes) in the Diatraea saccharalis (Lepidoptera: Pyralidae) parasitoid complex. In the first stage Beauveria isolates from the fungi collection of the Insect Pathology Laboratory at ESALQ/USP, in Piracicaba, State of São Paulo, Brazil, were characterized for selection of an isolate with the best characteristics for bioassays. The isolate B. bassiana 196 was chosen because of its natural occurrence in sugarcane plantations and also for its rapid growth rate and sporulation, as well as good pathogenicity. In the second stage, experiments were as good pathogenicity. In the second stage, experiments were carried to determine which stage or stages of the parasitoids Cotesia flavipes (Hymenoptera, Braconidae), Metagonystylum minense and Paratheresia claripalpis (Diptera, Tachinidae) would be susceptible to the fungus. In order to assess the nature of these interactions, parasitized sugarcane borers, D. saccharalis, were subjected to the fungus at temperatures of 22, 26 and 30°. The following parameters were evaluated: sugarcane borer mortality under each different condition, duration and viability of the imature stages. Results indicared that the application of B. bassiana on parasitized sugarcane borer was more effective than the sole application of the fungus or of the parasitoids alone. However the efficiency of the parasitoids was lowered in the presence of the fungus in the same hosts, and the survival of adult parasitoids was also affected. Therefore the utilization of B. bassiana in a sugarcane ecosystem should be considered to have a potential risk to the survival of D. saccharalis parasitoids populations
