Biology, thermal requirements and natural enemies of the Annona fruit borer Cerconota anonella (Sepp, 1830) (Lepidoptera: Oecophoridae)
Abstract in English
This research on Cerconota anonella was carried out to register its main natural enemies, to study its thermal requirements and to determine an artificial diet for rearing this pest in laboratory. The survey of the natural enemies was done at the Cerrado Research Center of EMBRAPA, in Brasilia, Federal District, Brazil. The larval parasitoid, Apanteles sp. (Hymenoptera: Braconidae) was the most abundant species collected during the survey. The egg-adult period of this parasitoid was ca. 15 days, but only males have emerged in the first generation. The other larval parasitoid collected, Xyphosomella sp. (Hymenoptera: Ichneumonidae), failed to parasitized the larvae in laboratory. Brachymeria annulata (Hymenoptera: Chalcididae), the pupal parasitoid collected, showed an egg-adult period of ca. 19 days, but again, all the adults emerging from the first generation were males. The other pupal parasitoid collected, Trichospilus diatraeae (Hymenoptera: Eulophidae), showed an egg-adult period varying from 15 to 18 days, producing 100 to 200 individuals per parasitized pupa and a sex ratio of 0.75. The other natural enemies found were the preying ant Camponotus (Myrmothrix) rufipes and the entomopathogenic fungus Beauveria bassiana infecting larvae and pupae. The experiments on thermal requirements of C. anonella were carried out in the Laboratory of Biological Control, Department of Entomology, Plant Pathology and Agricultural Zoology, College of Agriculture Luiz de Queiroz, University of São Paulo, in Piracicaba, State of São Paulo, Brazil. The range of temperature from 25° to 30°C was the most suitable one for keeping eggs, larvae and pupae in laboratory. For the adults the highest reproductive potential was obtained in the temperature range from 18° to 25°C. In the regions of Jales, Mirandópolis, Dracena, Lins and Jaboticabal, State of São Paulo, C. anonella presents 9 to 10 generations per year. When one considers only the fruiting period, the number of annual generations varies from 7 to 8. The most suitable artificial diet for the development of C. anonella is that containing wheat germ and soybean flour as a source of proteins for the biological parameters evaluated have shown similar results to those observed on populations deriving from larvae reared in fruits. The embryonic development of C. anonella was described as well. C. anonella larvae reared in artificial diet presented five instars. The sexual dimorphism of the pupae is clearly seen by the localization of the genital opening. The male mates up to five times during the adult period, with a minimum interval of 24 hours among matings. The longevity was reduced when adults received only water. Female fecundity was high when they were fed with different concentrations of sucrose and honey solutions.
