Resistance of Solanum berthaultii, S. tuberosum and interespecific potato hybrids to Phthorimaea operculella (Zeller, 1873) (Lep., Gelechiidae)
Resumé en anglais
Resistance of Solanum berthaultii introductions, Solanum tuberosum cultivars and S. tuberosum x S. berthaultii hybrids to potato tuber moth, Phthorimaea operculella, was investigated under laboratory conditions. Effects of leaves and tubers of these genotypes on the insect biology and oviposition preference were evaluated. Tests with leaves were conducted with S. berthaultii PI 473331 (with type A and B trichomes) and PI 473334 (with type A trichomes); S. tuberosum cultivars Aracy, Apuã and Itararé; S. tuberosum x S. berthaultii hybrids NYL 235-4 and N140-201 and the tomato cultivar Santa Clara. Tests with tubers were conducted only with the hybrids and cultivars. Effect of intact and pricked tubers was also evaluated on development of P. operculella. Results indicated that leaves of potato cultivars and hybrids did not affect the growth, fecundity and adult longevity. However, tomato leaves were less suitable for insect development than potato leaves. S. berthaultii genotypes did not affect larval survival but slightly affected the larval developmental time (PI 473331) and pupae weight (PI 473334). In free choice and no-choice tests, it was verified that these introductions were no-preferred for oviposition by P. operculella, while the hybrids and cultivars did not affect insect oviposition. In tests with tubers, NYL 235-4 showed antibiotic resistance because reduction in larval survival and increase in larval developmental time were detected with this hybrid. N 140-201 also increased larval developmental time when compared to the cultivars. On tubers, 'Itararé' was the most suitable cultivar for insect development. The larval viability was significantly increased when tubers surface was pricked. This indicates that the periderm constitutes a significant barrier to penetration of neonate larvae, which suggests that is important to keep the periderm integrity during the storage. There was no difference among genotypes concerning to the preference for oviposition on tubers.
