Associated control of Cornitermes cumulans (Kollar 1832) (Isoptera : Termitidae) with entomopathogenic fungi and the insecticide imidacloprid
Abstract in English
The objective of this research was to study the associated control of de Comitermes cumulans (Kollar, 1832) (Isoptera: Termitidae) with the entomopathogenic fungi Metarhizium anisopliae (Metsch.) Sorok. and Beauveria bassiana (Bals.) Vuill. and the insecticide imidacloprid. In the isolate selection, from 50 isolates of B. bassiana and M. anisopliae applied to C. cumulans, only 5 were selected. Among the selected isolates, M. anisopliae isolate 1037 had the highest mean confirmed (63.7%) and total mortality (94.6%) nine days after application. This isolate was followed by B. bassiana isolate 447, with 50.5% mean confirmed and 93. 5% total mortality. Among the selected isolates, only one had significantly lower conidial yield than others. Isolates 1037 and 447 were selected for the subsequent tests. Studies were also conducted on the cycle of M. anisopliae and B. bassiana in C. cumulans, the grooming mechanism by the termites, and the inhibition of this behavior by the action of a stressor. For both M. anisopliae and B. bassiana, conidial · adhesion initiated between 0 and 6 hours, fungal germination between 6 and 12 hours, penetration between 12 and 24 hours, colonization after 24 hours, and the fungal emergence from cadavers after 72 hours after application. The initiation of the conidiogenesis was the only difference between the cycle of M. anisopliae and B. bassiana. The termite workers showed an efficient grooming mechanism which allowed removal, in the first hours after fungal application, of practically all the conidia from the cuticle of soldiers and other workers. The insecticide imidacloprid, when used in sublethal concentrations, inhibited this behavior, and allowed a larger number of conidia to germinate and penetrate the insect cuticle. Field tests conducted against large termite nests demonstrated a synergistic effect between M. anisopliae and imidacloprid. When the fungus and the chemical stressor were combined, it was possible to reduce the conidial concentration 4 times (to 500 mg) and the concentration of imidacloprid 157 times (to 1.9 mg) in relation to the concentrations usually recommended per nest for these agents. Using these concentrations, it was possible to obtain 100% control of the large termite colonies with both economic and environmental benefits.
