Mites Tenuipalpidae (Acari: Prostigmata) of Brazil: new records in South America and The Carribean and morphological and morphometrical variability of Brevipalpus phoenicis (Geijskes)
Abstract in English
Many species of Tenuipalpidae cause important damages to cultivated plants. In some cases, the damage is related to the ability of the mite to transmit virus diseases to the plants. In Brazil and some other South American countries, Brevipalpus phoenicis (Geijskes) is considered as the most important species of that family by causing the plants’ disease known as “citrus leproses”, which decrease the productivity and can lead, in some cases, to the death of the plants. The objective of the present work was to establish a list of the world species of Tenuipalpidae, to identify the tenuipapids collected in Brazil and other South American countries and the Carribean and determine the morphological and morphometrical variability within the populations of B. phoenicis. A compilation of the literature related to the taxonomy of the Tenuipalpidae of the world is made and a list of the species of the group is elaborated. The genera Brevipalpus and Tenuipalpus have the largest number of species. Tenuipalpid mites examined were collected from different ecosystems and host plants and/or were from mite collections of ESALQ-USP. Forty species were found in Brazil and seventeen of them are new to the science. Fifteen species were recorded from other South American countries and two of them are also new to the science. The characterization of the types of deutonymphs and reticulations that occur on adult females of B.phonenicis were also conducted. Six morphological types of the deutonymphs were found. The studied adults females presented four patterns of reticulation, but about 67% of the 6839 females examined had the same pattern of reticulation. A morphometrical analysis showed four groups of populations from different host plants and localitions.
