Abstract in English
The fluctuation of damages caused by P. coffeella was studied in Coffea arabica L., populations, conducted under different forms and spacings, and their associations with meteorological variables. Other local factors that may affect the insect pest population were analyzed and sampling methods were discussed. The observations were carried out in burbomamarelo progenies (conducted at free growth and stubbed), and catuaí, in Pindorama (State of São Paulo) and in mundo-novo variety in three spacings (4 X 2, 3 X 2 and 2 X 1 m), in Campinas (State of São Paulo). The samplings to assess infestation were conducted at different plant heights, at north, south, east and west exposures. The meteorological variables (mean temperature, maximum and minimum averages, absolute maximum and minimum (?C), rainfall (mm), and insolation (hours) were obtained from meteorological stations located approximately 300 m from experimental plots, for both regions. Because P. coffeella attack causes leaf shedding altering experimental data, the correlations between infestation level and climatic variables were made from the beginning of infestation to its maximum point. Since there were three infestation peaks for both Campinas and Pindorama during the period of this study (May 1972 to February 1974), three analyses were carried out for each location. The infestation level was correlated with a former period of climatic data (P), with two (P + 1) and three periods (P + 2). It could be observed that in the locations studied the maximum levels of infestation were practically the same in dry and rainy seasons of the year. In Campinas, the mundo-novo variety, conducted at 4 X 2 m spacing was the most attacked by the insect. In Pindorama, the catuaí variety and stubbed burbomamarelo progenies did not differ with regard to coffee leaf miner attack, being the burbom-amarelo progeny, conducted as free growth, the less damaged by the insect. Despite the fact that these differences were observed as a function of microclimatic conditions created by crops with different foliage densities, the tendency of the infestation curves was similar for the different conditions analyzed, except that in Pindorama the peaks appeared earlier than in Campinas. In general, however, the coffee leaf miner infestation was always greater at the upper part of the plant. For the more spaced coffee trees (catuaí for Pindorama and 4 X 2 and 3 X 2 m mundo-novo for Campinas) a difference of infestation was observed on different sides of the plants. North and East exposures were more affected by the insect. The percentage of infested leaves in Campinas appeared negatively correlated with maximum average and absolute maximum (?C), while in Pindorama the highest correlation coefficient was that between the percentage of infestation and maximum average, even though there was a negative correlation with average, maximum and minimum average, and absolute maximum and minimum temperatures. Rainfall (mm) and insolation (hours) did not have any influence on the evolution of damages caused by P. coffeella. A grade system ranging from 1 to 5 was proposed to evaluate the damages caused by P. coffeella, and this proved to be valid under present experimental conditions. Caterpillars (through sampled leaves), cocoons (counted on tagged branches), and adults (suction trap) were surveyed, the latter being collected only in Campinas. The coccons showed preference to the lower part of the plant with 81.76% and 84.55% of the total concentrating there in Campinas and Pindorama, respectively. Thus, they were positively correlated in both locations with rainfall, although for Campinas they were also positively correlated with absolute minimum (?C), and negatively with insolation in Pindorama. The adults were negatively correlated with temperature (?C) and rainfall (mm), and positively correlated with evaporation (mm) and insolation (hours), when the climatic data were taken five days before each counting. The adults showed preference to flying between 3 P.M. and 6 A.M., and based on thermal needs, must have at least nine generations a year, with successive population peaks. Among other local factors that may alter the behaviour of P. coffeella, the time of attack, through damage simulation, showed that when the infestation occurs in the preparatory phase of the coffee tree, there is a need for greater reductions in foliar area for the damages to be higher, whereas if it occurs in the beginning of the rainy season (constructive phase) from 25% reduction, damages reach 39.22%, differing very little from the treatment with 75% reduction. Weeds which are P. coffeella cocoon hosts were collected; Emilia sonchifolia (L.) DC. (falsaserralha) showed leaf tears caused by coffee leaf miner caterpillars. Parasites belonging to Braconidae and Eulophidae families were found, with a predominance of the former. Two species of Braconidae, Mirax sp. and Colastes letifer (Mann, 1872) were referred on P. coffeella for the first time in Brazil. It was possible to observe that the influence of nutritional status of the plant on P. coffeella attack depends on the season of the year. During the dry season, the presence of nitrogen {N) and potassium (K) led to a lower coffee leaf miner attack. During the rainy season, there was no nitrogen influence, whereas phosphorus (P) caused insect pest increase and K its decrease. The micronutrients boron and zinc in both seasons had no effect on the insect.
