This research deals with the influence of 13 cultivars of green cole in some biological aspects of A. subterranea. The experiments were carried out in a climatic chamber (25 ± 1°C; 60 ± 10% RH; 14-hour photoperiod). When feeding on the cultivars ‘Manteiga Ribeirão Pires 2446’ and ‘Manteiga Ribeirão Pires 2620’ the insect presented the worst development in terms of life cycle length, weight and/or larval and pupal viability. The best development was reached on the cultivar ‘Gigante 915’ in which it was measured the food intake and utilization of “in natura” leaves.as well as of artificial media based on macerated leaves. The following indices were studied with the leaves: Consumption Index (CI), Growth Rate (GR), Approximated Digestibility (AD), Efficiency of Conversion of Ingested Food (ECI) and Efficiency of Conversion of Digested Food (ECD). As to the diets based on macerated leaves only the last three indices were determined. The cultivars did influence the larval period and viability, pupal period, weight and viability and % of malformed adults but did not affect the weight of larvae at the maximum development and adult longevity. The consumption of leaves, the weight gain by the larvae and the weight of feces increased with the insect development, reaching the maximum in the 6th instar. A close positive correlation was observed between the dry weight gain of the larva and the dry weight of the food consumed. Larvae reared on ‘Manteiga Ribeirão Pires 2446’ leaves presented a higher food consumption, measured in dry weight or foliar are a; higher CI and AD, and lower ECI and ECD when compared to the other cultivars. There was no influence of the cultivars in the growth rate. AD decreased with the insect development, increasing in the last instar; occurring the inverse with ECI and ECD. There was an inverse correlation between AD and (ECI- ECD) in the three cultivars tested and between AD and ECD in the cultivars ‘Manteiga Ribeirão Pires 2620’ and ‘Gigante 915’ on “in natura” leaves and on artificial media based on nia.cerate:1 leaves. Concerning the leaves of these two cultivars it was observed an inverse correlation between CI and ECI, and between CI and ECD. As to the diets based on macerated leaves from the cultivars 'Manteiga' there occurred a higher AD and a lower ECD in relation to ‘Gigante 915’, but no difference was observed in ECI among the cultivars tested. Another conclusion is that the artificial media based on macerated leaves may substitute the “in natura” leaves in the determination of the indices of food intake and utilization.
