This research deals with the influence of four genotypes of Ricinus communis L. (native material and the cultivars Guarani, Amarelo de Irecê and IAC-80) on the different stages of the life cycle of P. ricini reared in natural conditions (29 ± 8°C; 65 ± 10% RH; 12-hour photophase) and in laboratory conditions (27 ± 1°C; 60 ± 10% RH; 14-hour photophase). Also the consumption and food utilization, on native material and cultivar Guarani, were studied in laboratory conditions by evaluating the following indices: relative consumption rate (RCR), relative metabolic rate (RMR), relative growth rate (RGR), approximate digestibility (AD), efficiency of conversion of food ingested (ECI), and efficiency of conversion of food digested (ECD). The genotypes used and the conditions of caterpillar rearing did influence the duration and the weight of the larval stage, as well as the size of the caterpillars at the maximum development and the silk weight. Larval and egg viabilities, duration of the pupal stage, weight of the cocoons and pupae, and the number of eggs per female were affected only by the genotypes. Insects reared in controlled conditions presented the corrected reproductive potential higher than that presented by the ones reared in natural conditions. Considering these biological parameters and the corrected reproductive potential it was observed that the cultivar Amarelo de Irecê was the less suitable for the insect, whereas ‘Guarani’ and ‘IAC-80’ were the most suitables. The leaf consumption, the gain of weight of the caterpillars and the weight of feces produced increased with the insect development, reaching a maximum at the fifth instar. The caterpillars reared on the native material presented higher food consumption, either in dry weight or in foliar area, when compared to those reared in ‘Guarani’. There was influence of the genotypes utilized in the RMR, AD, ECI, and ECD. The index AD showed a decreasing tendency with the insect development, increasing at the fourth instar and decreasing at the fifth for these two genotypes. There was an inverse correlation between ECD and RMR, and between ECD and AD. Taking into account the prospers agronomic traits for eresericulture exploration and for seed production, cultivar Guarani can be considered the most suitable for cultivation in the Northeartern region of Brazil as an alternative to the native material.
