Aspects of the biology of Marshallius bonellii (Boheman, 1830) (Coleoptera, Curculionidae, Hylobiinae) a pest of fig tree (Ficus carica L.)
Abstract in English
This research deals with the biology of the fig tree (Ficus carica L.) borer, Marshallius bonelli (Boheman, 1830) (Coleoptera, Curculionidae, Hylobiinae) in laboratory conditions (25 ± 2°C; RH 60-70%; 12-hour photophase) and with some field observations as well. The adults were fed with pieces of fig tree twigs and shoots. The larvae were reared on the artificial diet of SHANKS & FINNIGAN (1973), for larvae of Otiorhynchus sulcatus F. (Coleoptera, Curculionidae, Otiorhynchinae), where the beans of the original diet were substituted by a macerate of fig tree twigs. Besides sexual dimorphism and behaviour of adults in the habitat, the following parameters (mean values) were observed: egg size (0.866 x 0.721 mm), egg period (4.9 days), egg viability (48.6%), larval period (41.11 days for the females, and 41.31 days for the males), larval viability (62.35%), pupal weight (184.38 mg for the females and 176.33 for the males), adult longevity (66.00 days for the females and 73.37 days for the males), and sex ratio (♀ : ♂).
