Abstract in English
There are several factors which effect cotton production; among them the attack of the pink bollworm, Pectinophora gossypiella (Saunders, 1843) (Lepidoptera-Gelechiidae) is an important one due to its direct damage caused to the production. In this view the present work was carried out, and its objectives were: to evaluate the damages caused by this insect to fiber quality and quantity, as well as to seed production, through the study of the critical phase of the cotton plant to the pest, effect of increasing pest population on cotton infestation, action of the pink bollworm on bloom shedding, and effect of new insecticides on the pest. As far as infestation is concerned, it was found that the cotton plant critical phase was at 105 days, and of production is considered, this phase was at 90 days, since the treatments made before these phases did not significantly decrease infestation, not did it increase production. There was proportionality among treatments with different infestation percentages and seed productions, being the 100% infestation level responsible for 48.56% yield loss. Also, it was found that the pink bollworm did not cause bloom or bolls shedding, neither did it interfer with fiber quality. In an experiment set in order to study the effect of increasing pest populations on cotton yield it was found that there were differences on in infestation percentage for the treatments with protection before 110 days, as at 60; 75 and 90 days; however there was no difference in seed production, or in seed weight, either. In an experiment set in order to study the efficiency of some insecticides on pink bollworm control it was found that decamethrin, permethrin, fenvalerate, carbaryl plus molasses and phunthoate were the more efficient, since in the controls infestation was 87.64%.
