Neste trabalho são relacionadas 23 espécies de Lepidoptera, coletadas em folhas e frutos de cacaueiro no campo e viveiro, das principais regiões produtoras da Amazônia Brasileira. Destas, foi possível destacar dez espécies mais freqüentes e elaborar chaves dicotômicas para separação de suas lagartas a nível de família e espécie. São apresentadas as descrições e ilustrações das lagartas, acompanhadas de informações sobre a importância das espécies, distribuição geográfica, inimigos naturais e plantas hospedeiras. As lagartas mais comumente encontradas nos cacauais da região Amazônica, por ordem de frequência, foram: Euclystes plusioides (Walker), Diopa sp., Sylepta prorogata Hampson, Cerconota dimorpha Duckworth, Zetesima baliandra (Meyrick), Hemeroblemma numeria (Drury), Hipercompe sp., Pseudo plusia includens (Walker), Spodoptera androgea (Cramer) e S. latifascia (Walker). As espécies mais prejudiciais ao cacaueiro na região são: E. plusioides, C. dimorpha e S. prorogata. Das espécies coletadas, E. numerica (Drury), H. leontia (Walker), Hipercompe sp., Monodes agrotina Guenée, Phobetron sp., Sibine sp., S. androgea (Cramer), S. latifascia (Walker), S. eridania (Cramer), Thecla sp. e Z. baliandra (Meyrick) foram aquelas constatadas pela primeira vez na região, sendo S. androgea, Diopa sp., E. plusioides, H. numeria, Z. baliandra e S. prorogata, lagartas descritas pela primeira vez.

Identification of the most common caterpillars (Lepidoptera) associated with cacao in the brasilian Amazon

ln this paper 23 species of Lepidoptera, collected from leaves and pods of cacao in the field and nursery, from the principal cacao producing regions of Brasilian Amazon are listed. The species were most frequent and dichotomous key at the level of family and species is elaborated. Illustrated descriptions of the caterpillars including information on the importance of the species geographical distribuition, natural enemies and host-plants are included. The most common caterpillars in order of frequency were: Euclystes plusioides (Walker), Diopa sp., Sylepta prorogata Hampson, Cerconota dimorpha Duckworth, Zetesima baliandra (Meyrick), Hemeroblemma numeria (Drury), Hipercompe sp., Pseudoplusia includens (Walker), Spodoptera androgea Cramer) and S. latifascia (Walker). The most destructive caterpillars to cacao were E. plusioides, C. dimorpha and S. prorogata. Species wich were collected for the first time in the region were H. numeria (Drury), H. leontia (Walker), Hipercompe sp., Monodes agrotina Guenée, Phobetron sp., Sibine sp., S. androgea (Cramer), S. latifascia (Walker), S. eridania (Cramer), Thecla sp. and Z. baliandra (Meyrick). The caterpillars S. androgea, Diopa sp., E. plusioides, H. numeria, Z. baliandra and S. prorogata were described for the first time.
