Os aleloquímicos 2-tridecanona (2-T) e 2-undecanona( 2-U) , presentes nos tricomas foliares do tomateiro selvagem Lycopersicon hirsutum f. glabratum (PI 134417), têm sido citados como fatores de resistência a diversas pragas do tomateiro, podendo ser incorporados nos materiais comerciais (L. esculentum) através de programas de melhoramento genético. Como as lagartas de H. zea alimentam-se, nos primeiros dias após a eclosão, quase exclusivamente de tecido foliar, estudou-se a sobrevivência de H. zea durante os primeiros três dias da fase larval em folhas de duas espécies de Lycopersicon (L. esculentum 'Santa Cruz Kada AG 373' e L. hirsutum f. glabratum linhagem PI 134417) e a biologia desse inseto após a manutenção das lagartas durante os primeiros quatro dias em dietas artificiais contendo diferentes concentrações de 2-T e 2-U. Verificou-se que a mortalidade durante os primeiros três dias da fase larval em PI 134417 foi cerca de 2 a 3 vezes maior que aquela constatada em L. esculentum. A viabilidade de H. zea, durante os primeiros quatro dias da fase larval, foi reduzida nas dietas artificiais contendo 2-T nas concentrações de 0,10, 0,20 e 0,40% e 2-U a 0,035 e 0,070%, assim como nas dietas contendo o 2-T associado ao 2-U nas concentrações de 0,20% de 2-T + 0,035% de 2-U e 0,40% de 2-T + 0,070% de 2-U. O 2-T fornecido a H. zea durante os primeiros quatro dias de sua fase larval reduziu a viabilidade total da fase larval nas concentrações de 0,20 e 0,40% assim como quando associado ao 2-U nas concentrações de 0,20% de 2-T + 0,035% de 2-U e 0,40% de 2-T + 0,070% de 2-U. O 2-U fornecido isoladamente a H. zea durante os primeiros quatro dias de sua fase larval à concentração de 0,070% provocou alongamento da fase larval e redução no peso das pupas. Quando presente na concentração de 0,035%, o 2-U reduziu a viabilidade pupal. Verificou-se também que o 2-T é tóxico a lagartas recém-eclodidas de H. zea, quando aplicado topicamente. A DL50 (dose letal) foi de 6,34 µg de 2-T por lagarta.

The 2-tridecanone (2-T) and 2-undecanone (2-U) allelochemicals, present in the trichomes on the foliage of the wild tomato Lycopersicon hirsutum f. glabratum (PI 134417), have been reported as resistance factors to a number of pests of cultivated tomato (L. esculentum). They can be incorporated into commercial species through genetic breeding. Since H. zea larvae feed almost exclusively on foliage on the first few days after hatching, their survival was studied during the first three days of larval stage on leaves of two Lycopersicon species (L. esculentum 'Santa Cruz Kada AG 373' and L. hirsutum f. glabratum, PI 134417). The H. zea biology was investigated after maintaining the larvae, for the first four days, on artificial diets containing different 2-T and 2-U concentrations. The results of the trial showed that mortality during the first three days of the larval stage on PI 134417 was two to three times greater than that on L. esculentum. The H. zea viability, during the first four days of larval stage, was reduced by artificial diets with 2-T at concentrations 0,10, 0,20 e 0,40% and 2-U at 0,035 and 0,070%, as well as by diets with 2-T associated to 2-U at concentrations 0,20% of 2-T + 0,035% of 2-U and 0,40% of 2-T + 0,070% of 2-U. 2-T given to H. zea during the first four days of larval stage reduced total viability of larval stage at concentrations 0,20 and 0,40%. Also, 2-T associated to 2-U at concentrations 0,20% of 2-T + 0,035% of 2-U and 0,40% of 2-T + 0,070% of 2-U, reduced total viability of larval stage. When only 2-U was given to H. zea during the first four days of larval stage, at concentration 0,070%, it caused lengthening of larval stage larval and reduction of pupal weight. At concentration 0,035%, 2-U reduced pupal viability. The results also showed that 2-T is toxic to H. zea neonates when topically applied, and LD50 was 6,34 µg/larvae.
