The occurrence period and control of Scrobipalpula absoluta (Meyrick) (Lepidoptera - Gelechiidae) in the tomato crop (Lycopersicum esculentum Mill.)
Abstract in English
Due to the increasing importance of the tomato leafminer, Scrobipalpula absoluta Meyrick (Lepidoptera Gelechiidae) for the tomato crop, the present work was done so that further information on the bioecology and control of the mentioned pest could be provided. The laboratory trials were carried out at the Department of Entomology of the Agronomic School at the University of São Paulo, Piracicaba, SP and the field trials were performed in Elias Fausto, Bariri and Piracicaba, SP. lt was observed that the pest life cycle lasts 49.2 days in average. The female lays the most of the eggs in the first 3 days of the laying process, summing up to 105 eggs in the whole life cycle. The adults life cycle was 19.6 and 22.9 days long for males and females, respectively. The larval stage presented 4 instar within a period of 13.6 days. This is the stage that is harmful for the tomato plants: leaves, shoots, flowers and fruits. The pupal stage lasts 8.8 days ln average. Field trials carried out in the region of Piracicaba, SP, showed that the S. absoluta infestation start in September at low levels, and gradually increases when the control measures have to be strengthened. The utilization of light traps consisting of the little wings impregnated with axle grease proved to be very effective for capturing the leafminers adults, since this is a very efficient tool in the management control practices of S. absoluta especially under higher infestation. However, it is recommended that additional studies be performed, regarding the number and distribution in the area. The preventive chemical control with soil granular systemic products, such as carbofuran, aldicarb and phorate was not efficient in the control of S. absoluta. ln relation to the curative chemical control, the most efficient products were phenthoate (Cidial 50 E, at 750 g ai/ha), cartap (Cartap 50 PS at 750 g ai/ha) and permethrin (Pounce 384 EC at 50-75 g ai/ha), which are widely used in the national agrochemical market.
