Damage on wheat grain (Triticum aestivum L.) caused by Thyanta perditor (Fabr., 1794) (Hemiptera - Pentatomidae) and observations on its egg parasite
Abstract in English
This research deals with the effects of diferente population levels of Thyanta perditor (F., 1794) adults on the development of wheat grains, cultivar IAC-5 Maringá, in field conditions. The insects were kept in cages to avoid their escapement and the attack by their natural enemies. The experiment was set at the EMBRAPA Research Branch in Dourados, State of Mato Grosso do Sul, Brazil. The occurrence of eggs parasites was observed. The following stages of grain development were studied: I) from the milky stage to harvest time (30 days); II) from the beginning of the milky stage to the soft dough stage (10 days); III) from the begenning of the soft dough stage to the hard dough stage (10days); IV) from the beginning of the hard dough stage to the harvest time stage (10 days). The experiment outlining used was that of randomized blocks with factorial. The results allowed to draw the following conclusions: - the grain yield was greatly reduced when the feeding pressure lasted 30 days(17.54; 27.26 and 37.34), for 0.5, 1,0 and 2.0 insects per wheatear, respectively) ; - the treatments dit not influence the number of grains per wheatear, whereas the weight of one thousand seeds decreased significantly (8.31; 22.23 and 33.20% for the increasing levels of insects); seed quality were also affected and the damage increased as the number of insects per wheatear increased; the germinative power decreased from 87.5% (check) to 47.0; 27.5 and 6.5% - significant losses in yield were not observed when the insects were kept for a10 day period in each one of the seed stages, although the level of two insects in the milky stage have caused a significant reduction in the weight of one thousand seeds; the milky stage was the most susceptible one in terms of yield losses. The seed germinative power was affected in such a extension that even 0.5 insects per wheatear in the most susceptible stage (soft dough) were enough to prevent the use of the grains as seeds. The stage of hard dough was affectedfrom the level of 1.0 insect per wheatear, while the milky stage was relatively more tolerant. The protein content was apparently not affected by any of the infestation levels, although it was observed that the grains in the milky and soft dough stages were more susceptibles concerning protein content loss. No association was observed between pathogenic and / or non pathogenic fungi isolated from the seeds and the increasing levels of T. perditor. The egg parasite Microphanurus scuticarinatus Costa Lima, 1937 (Hymenoptera, Scelionidae) was an important natural enemy of T. perditor.
