Title in English
Population dynamics and control of Cosmopolites sordidus (Germar, 1824) and Metamasius hemipterus Linné, 1764 (Coleoptera, Curculionidae), in banana plantation of the cultivar Prata, in the State of Espírito Santo, Brazil
Abstract in English
This research was carried out to study the population fluctuation of Cosmopolites sordidus (Germar, 1824) and Metamasius hemipterus Linné, 1764 (Coleoptera, Curculionidae), the influence of the climatic factors in the movements of the insects, the population trends, the effectiveness of pseudostem traps in the control and the determination of the level of control for the first species. The adult population was evaluated by means of pseudostem traps from plants which had already produced bunches and had recently been harvested at a height up to 1 meter. The experiment was set in Alfredo Chaves, State of Espírito Santo, Brazil, in a banana plantation of the cultivar "Prata", from 1977 to 1982. The data obtained indicated that: adults of C. sordidus have a uniform movement all through the year, and the climatic factors had little influence in the population fluctuation of both species; the use of treated baits or the removal of the insects from the area are not efficient methods when unilaterally applied; as to the level of control it was observed that the monthly means of 1.6 adults of C. sordidus by bait did not interfere in the production of the first bunch; the population of M. hemipterus was not influenced by the treatments due to the insect habits.
