The coffee berry borer, Hypothenemus hampei (Ferrari, 1867) (Coleoptera, Scolytidae), is an important pest which affects the coffee yield. This work aimed to study the following aspects: 1) to evaluate the borer damage from the beginning of berry development to harvesting; 2) to suggest new methods for evaluating pest population in the field; 3) to test the effect of some synthetic pyrethroids on the pest; 4) to observe the effect of granulated systemic insecticides on the pest, when the product is applied in the soil, and 5) to study the mechanism of action of endosulfan which is considered the best one to control the borer. The borer damage was evaluated by taking several twigs with bored and not bored berries. The bored ones were tagged with different markings, according to the period of development, so as to establish the damage during the 14-week period of berry development. The calculations showed 55.63% of falling berries (45.81% bored and 9.82% not bored). It seemed there was no significant influence of rain and wind on the fall of the berries. A survey was done in the field by sampling 400 coffee plants, using 8 different types of sampling. The data obtained were compared in order to choose an ideal model to be adopted. The selected types were the ones that showed more similar results to those of the total field survey. To test the effect of the synthetic pyrethroids an experiment was set in the field with randomized blocks using the following products: permethrin 38.4% - 50g and 100g of active ingredient per 1,000 plants; fenvalerate 30% - 240g and 480g of a.i./1,000 plants; cypermethrin 40% - 240g and 480g of a.i./1,000 plants and endosulfan 35% - 700g of a.i./1,000 plants. The results aiming the curative and protective action showed that those pesticides are far less effectives than endosulfan. To evaluate the effect of the granulated systemic insecticides (when applied in the soil) on the adults of the coffee berry borer, an experiment was set in the field using the same statistical model of the anterior experiment and the following insecticides: carbofuran 5G - 0.4g of active ingredient per age; aldicarb 10G - 0.4 and 1.2g of a.i./age; mephosfolan 10G - 1.0g and 1.2g of a.i./age; phorate 10G - 1.0g and 1.2g of a.i./age; dimethoate 5G - 0.25g of a.i./age and oxamyl 10G 0.4g of a.i./age. On the developing berries it was tried to evaluate the protective effect at 7, 15, 21, 30 45 and 60 days from application. On mature berries it was evaluated the protective and the curative action at 7, 15, 30 and 60 days from application. All the insecticides were ineffectives on the coffee berry borer control. The mechanism of the action of endosulfan was studied by setting several experiments in laboratory and in field conditions: 1) Residual period - The berries were sprayed in the field, then harvested periodically and brought to the laboratory where they were artificially infestated with the coffee berry borer. The results showed that the residual period lasts 3 weeks. 2) Study of the fumigant effect of endosulfan and BHC (which is also employed against the coffee berry borer). An experiment simulating the field conditions was set in the laboratory and the results indicated that the fumigant action of endosulfan is more efficient than that of BHC due to the greater number of abandoned tunnels in the berries. 3) The action of direct and indirect contact of endosulfan was also tested and one can conclude that this insecticide is really efficient on the coffee berry borer control, due to its different types of action which in the total results in a high percentage of mortality of the borer, even in the field.
