Compared efficiency of Apanteles flavipes (Cameron, 1891) for the control of Diatraea spp. in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil
Abstract in English
In view of the important role that natural enemies play in biologically controlling the sugarcane borer, Diatraea spp. - considered one of the most serious pests affecting sugarcane crops - a study was conducted with the aim of appraising the parasitism obtained with the introduction of Apanteles flavipes (Cameron, 1891) (Hymenoptera: Braconidae). The studies were carried out in areas belonging to the Quissaman and Victor Sence sugar mills, located in North part of the State of Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, during the period 1977 to 1981, by collecting biological forms from dead hearts caused by Diatraea spp. larvae in young cane. Results of this study indicated the adaptation of A. flavipes in the areas at which it was released, showed its high efficiency in the areas of more frequent occurrence of Metagonistylum minense Towns., 1916 when compared to the areas of Paratheresia claripalpis Wulp., 1896 (Diptera: Tachinidae) occurrence and also showed no effect in the Ipobracon spp. and/or Agathis sp. populations.
