A presente pesquisa teve como objetivo determinar a potencialidade da radiação gama no controle de estágios imaturas das moscas das frutas, C. capitata e A. fraterculus, infestando frutos de mamões papayas, cultivar Sunrise Solo. Pelos resultados obtidos, pôde-se observar que a colocação de até duas fileiras de mamões entre a fonte de Cobalto-60 e os frutos alvos, causou considerável atenuação na radiação recebida pelas larvas e ovos de C. capitata, infestados sobre os frutos alvos. A técnica de irradiação de mamões infestados por ovos e larvas de C. capitata e A. fraterculus, dentro de caixas de papelão, promoveu maior eficiência no processo de irradiação. As doses de 107,74 e 50,82 Gy, calculadas pelo método de Probit, foram as mais altas concentrações, respectivamente, para causar a mortalidade total das formas imaturas de C. capitata e A. fraterculus, a partir de ovos e larvas irradiadas. As doses esterilizantes para os adultos de ambas as pragas, provenientes de pupas irradiadas, foram respectivamente, de 60 e 40 Gy. Concluiu-se que as doses de radiação gama, bem menores do que a dose máxima permitida pela legislação internacional, podem ser empregadas com eficiência, em um processo quarentenário, para a desinfestação das formas imaturas em mamões papayas e para a esterilização de adultos, provenientes de pupas de C. capitata e A. fraterculus, irradiadas.

Abstract in English
The aim of this research was to determine if gamma irradiation is a potential treatment for control of the immature stages of fruit flies, C. capitata and A. fraterculus in papaya fruits, cultivar Sunrise Solo. By the results, could be observed the gamma rays attenuation by one and two papaya fruits placed between source and infested fruit, and this changed the radiation doses required to obtain mortality in eggs and larvae of the Medfly. The efficacy of irradiation was higher when the infested papayas were packed in paper box. The radiation dose determined using the Probit 9 concept, for immature stages mortality of C. capitata was 107,74 Gy and for A. fraterculus was 50,82 Gy. The sterilizing doses for adults of C. capitata and A. fraterculus, irradiated as pupae, was 60 Gy and 40 Gy, respectively. This research indicate that the gamma radiation technology could be an alternative to postharvest treatment of export papayas with toxic chemical fumigants. The radiation dosages required for immature stages of fruit flies were lower than the international ones recommended for fruit irradiation.
