Os fungos entomopatogênicos têm sido estudados para o controle de cupins xilófagos em substituição aos pesticidas químicos que são nocivos ao ambiente. Com o objetivo de detectar fungos patogênicos a cupins xilófagos foram isoladas 21 espécies de fungos mitospóricos (Subdivisão Deuteromycotina) presentes em ninhos e no exoesqueleto de cupins mortos, pertencentes aos gêneros Trichoderma, Paecilomyces, Fusarium, Aspergillus e Gliocladium. Em testes laboratoriais para determinar a potencial patogenicidade dos fungos, uma suspensão pura aquosa de conídios foi inoculada em cupins da espécie Nasutitermes globiceps mantidos em placas de Petri com meio de cultura ágar-água e papel-filtro. O fungo Aspergillus sp. 1 apresentou patogenicidade superior e significativamente diferente do controle inoculado com água esterilizada e inferior à apresentada pelo fungo utilizado como padrão Metarhizium anisopliae. Em testes de repelência constatou-se que os fungos Aspergillus sp. 1 e Metarhizium anisopliae não foram repelentes ao cupim Nasutitermes globiceps podendo ser usados em futuros testes de campo para avaliar sua eficiência

Action of isolated fungi in wood termites Nasutitermes globiceps (Holmgren) (Isoptera: Termitidae: Nasutitermitinae)

In a survey to detect fungi pathogenic to termites, 21 species of fungi were isolated from nests and the body of dead termites. Isolates were identified as Aspergillus, Fusarium, Gliocladium, Paecilomyces and Trichoderma. To determine the potential pathogenicity of fungi, aqueous suspensions at 107 conidia/ml were applied to Nasutitermes globiceps maintained in Petri dishes filled with water-agar and filter paper. The fungus Aspergillus sp. 1 was pathogenic to termites showing significant difference compared to the control inoculated with sterilized water, but were less virulent than Metarhizium anisopliae used as standard. Repellency tests indicated that Aspergillus sp. 1 and Metarhizium anisopliae did not show repellency to Nasutitermes globiceps, holding promise for further development in field tests.
