Sugarcane quality
Abstract in English
Site specific farm management aims to explore the potential of the crop considering the differences within the field. Thus, a large amount of information is necessary, as yield or obtained income, this information shall be collected in a fast, automated and georreferenced way. However, in the case of sugarcane, quality, or sugar content will also directly influence farmer's income. Several studies suggest harvester automation aiming to monitor yield, but few consider the quality analysis in the process. Among the existing methods for measuring sugar content the one that is best suited to this need is the spectroscopy. Therefore, it is necessary to assess the feasibility of its use and which form of sampling will obtain better calibrations. So, spectra that were obtained from different sample forms (cross sectional surface, transverse sectional surface, skin, juice and fiber) were related to laboratory results of Brix, Pol, ATR, Purity and fiber content. For the correlations, multivariate analyzes using PLSR were used. Among the spectra obtained directly in the stalks, the measurements on the transverse sectional surface were the ones with better correlations with Brix. However, when using spectra directly from the stalks to predict results obtained from composite samples, the differences between the stalks reduce the predictive capacity of the method. So spectra obtained from composite samples like juice or fibers were those with best capacity to predict laboratory data. The fiber content was the parameter that less correlated with spectral measurements. Quality differences were found between different heights in the stem. Quality parameters were also mapped in a commercial field and spatial dependence between samples was found. The spectrometry was effective in mapping regions with different quality levels over the field. A coefficient of variation of 5% was obtained in a 16.5 ha field, which could justify local management actions.
