Infrared thermography is an advanced agricultural management option for investigating water stress in advance of visual detection, avoiding declines in crop yields, and at the same time assessing spatial and temporal variability in the crop water status. This work presents a collection of studies on the use of thermal images of vegetal canopies from different crops of commercial interest, made to investigate the physiological conditions of the abiotic (water) stress on the water productivity, as well as the relations of gas exchanges between the plants and the atmosphere. The experiments were carried out in a greenhouse at the "Luiz de Queiroz" School of Agriculture (ESALQ / USP) in Piracicaba, SP. The treatments consisted of water replenishment levels based on a control treatment (Level 100% θcc), with a water depth applied to return soil moisture to field capacity (θcc). Thus, the 100% θcc treatment was established as the optimal condition, and the other treatments were fractions of the control treatment. The gas exchanges (H2O and CO2) made by the crops were measured using an infrared gas analyzer system, and the effect of water stress was measured by determining the Crop Water Stress Index (CWSI), calculated on the basis of thermal infrared camera images. Significant variations (Tukey's test, p <0.05) of leaf temperature were observed according to the level of water replenishment. There were significant correlations between the physiological variables and (Tc-Ta); and between productivity and CWSI, according to the level of water replenishment. The results showed that crops under water stress presented reductions in the rate of CO2 assimilation; in parallel, there were reductions in stomatal conductance and in the transpiration rate. Although conceived as an index of water stress, CWSI showed a good correlation with physiological parameters and the productivity of the studied crops. This index may be a tool of analysis of the spatial variability of crop water stress. Subsequently, this variability may be correlated with the physiological aspects involved, which results in decreases in the agricultural productivity.
