Abstract in English
In 2017, cereal, fibre and oleaginous crops in Brazil occupied 61 million hectares, of which 90% corresponded to rice, maize and soybeans crops. Because about 90% of the soybean is cultivated under no tillage (SPD) and maize is the off- season crop, approximately 65% of the SPD area remains uncovered by vegetation for up to eight months a year, leading to continuous losses of soil and water. In the face of this problem, a participatory methodology was developed (participatory quality index - IQP) to qualify the SPD deployment by farmer. However, IQP is a self- assessment-based method to check the environmental quality of agricultural way of production on the farm. This aspect can represent a fragility because it can induce biases in the process and distortion out of environmental reality. However, if the IQP is valid, it would be an excellent tool because it does not require big amount of measuring instruments to obtain results related to sediment production control. Based on the hypothesis that the quality indices of agricultural management on SPD are capable to indicate both the level of quality and environmental conservation, especially of soil and water, the objective of this research was to characterise, based on the hydrosedimentological variables, the environment of two first-order drainage basin where they predominate the irrigated agriculture, and then, based on the indicators generated, to relate to IQP values obtained from the literature to crosscheck with the farmers' perceptions about their lands and plantations. A pair of catchment areas in Itaí-SP was chosen, identified as ITA-1 (74 ha) and ITA2 (47 ha), which presents the predominant soil classified as typical red clay latosol clayey to very clayey texture. On them, crops of maize, soybean, wheat, common beans and cotton predominate were under central pivot irrigation. The automatic environmental stations (EHS) to monitor rainfall and water flow (by "H" flume), and to estimate the suspended solid concentration of the watershed stream to calculate the dissipation of rainfall erosivity index (IDE), collected data from October, 2017 to January, 2019. A total of 139 rainfall events were recorded in ITA-1 and 167 were recorded in ITA-2, but those only higher than 10 mm h-1 (61 in ITA-1, and 49 in ITA-2 ) were considered. The average water flow was 5.8 and 8.7 L s-1 in ITA-1 and ITA-2, respectively. The hydrosedimentological index (IDE) resulted in 0.787 (ITA-1) and 0.884 (ITA-2). The participatory index (IQP) based on the literature primary data resulted in 5.62 (ITA-1) and 6.89 (ITA-2). Based on the hydrosedimentological indicators, it was observed that the agricultural environment present in ITA-2 was more efficient to control soil and water losses and maintain water flow than in ITA-1. The IDE and IQP indexes showed positive correlation in the present case study, indicating that the higher the IQP, the greater the IDE and vice versa, and that can represent the standard of agricultural management in the scope of hydrographic basins.
