Este estudo objetiva analisar as características dos profissionais que ocupam o papel de gestor, em nível estratégico, nas indústrias de petróleo cujas matrizes situam-se em países da América do Sul. A primeira parte apresenta o problema de pesquisa, seus objetivos e justifica as razões pelas quais o tema foi escolhido. A segunda parte trata da fundamentação teórica, sobre os principais conceitos a serem abordados no estudo, quais sejam: a importância da análise da influência do contexto externo sobre a evolução da competitividade empresarial; como o contexto interno das organizações configura-se em função das pressões externas; como as estratégias organizacionais resultantes condicionam os requisitos do perfil e do papel do gestor. A terceira parte descreve a metodologia contextualista que foi utilizada, dentre outras razões, por permitir uma análise qualitativa dos dados que fosse abrangente deste conjunto de fatores acima discriminados. Para desenvolver o estudo, realizou-se pesquisa descritiva que resultou na elaboração de sete estudos de casos, os quais são expostos na quarta parte desta dissertação. Foram realizados levantamentos de campo em sete empresas, distribuídas em seis países do continente sul americano, a saber: Argentina, Brasil, Chile, Colômbia, Peru e Venezuela. Os dados interpretados e analisados foram consolidados visando formular, na última parte desta dissertação, algumas conclusões e, principalmente, reflexões acerca das tendências de mudanças do perfil de gestor na indústria petrolífera.

The main objective of this study is to analyze the characteristics of the professionals holding strategic management positions in the oil industry with headquarters in South American countries. The first part presents the research problem, its objectives and justifies the reasons why this theme was chosen. The second part discusses the theoretical foundations regarding the main concepts adopted in this study which refers to the importance of the externai context, regarding the evolution of the business competitiveness, as well as of the internai context as the organization adapts itself to external pressures. Therefore, this section discusses the concepts necessary to understand how the requisites of the professional profile and the role of the manager are contingent on organizational strategies. In the third part, the contextualist methodology is described, which was used among, other reasons, for allowing a qualitative analysis of the data. The study adopted the descriptive research approach, based on seven case studies. The field research data are presented in the fourth part of this dissertation. Interviews were conducted in seven companies located in six South-American countries, which are: Argentina, Brazil, Chile, Colombia, Peru and Venezuela. The data were interpreted and analyzed in order to present, in the last part of the dissertation, some conclusions and reflections regarding change trends on the managers profile in the oil industry.
