Abstract in English
Introduction: the increase in the longevous elderly population has been accompanied by several diseases, including diabetes mellitus (DM) that if not treated properly tends to present complications and sequelae that can lead to a compromise in functional capacity. Objective: To verify the functional capacity of diabetic and non-diabetic longevous elderly people being monitored at the Geriatrics Outpatient Clinic of the Joel Domingos Machado School Health Center (CSE). Method: this is a cross-sectional observational study carried out with 13 elderly with DM and 17 without DM, aged 80 years or older, registered at the Geriatrics Outpatient Clinic of the CSE "Joel Domingos Machado" for at least one year. The longevous were characterized regarding sociodemographic, clinical and epidemiological aspects, besides the evaluation with the following instruments: Mini Mental State Examination (MMSE), Timed Up And Go (TUG), Performance-Oriented Mobility Assesment Scale (POMA-Brazil), Katz Scale, Lawton and Brody Scale, manual grip strength evaluation, through the dynamometer and body mass index and blood pressure measurement. All ethical precepts were respected. Results: The results of this research generated two scientific articles: "Sociodemographic, epidemiological, and functional aspects of longevous elderly individuals assisted in a specialized outpatient clinic" and "Functional capacity evaluation of longevous individuals with and without diabetes mellitus". There was a predominance of women, with ages ranging between 80 and 90 years, white, and widowed. The participants had from 5 to 8 diseases and used from 5 to 9 medications. Of those with DM, the average time of diagnosis was over 18 years. The longevous with and without DM were independent to perform the ABVD's and partially dependent for the AIVD's and had reduced mobility and balance, low handgrip strength and no possible cognitive changes. On the other hand, diabetics had reduced gait and balance, and pre-obesity. Conclusion: There was no significant association between DM and socio-demographic and clinical factors and functional disability. Through functional capacity assessment it is possible to implement preventive actions aimed at minimizing dependence, maintaining autonomy and improving the quality of life of longevous elderly people.
