Keywords in Portuguese
Acuidade Vernier
Ambliopia
Clínica oftalmológica

Vernier acuity
Abstract in English
The utilization of Vernier acuity was evaluated in a ophthalmic clinical setting. Five experiments were designed. On the first two, it was developed and validated the clinical use of a paradigm of the Vernier acuity. On the remaining experiments, it was analyzed the existence of the binocular summation, the effect of the age on the measurement and its intra individual variability and the last one the use of the Vernier acuity in amblyopes. The results showed the presence of a binocular summation and a clear improvement on the Vernier acuity in adults in relation to children. The intra individual variability was high, and it was estimated that for obtaining a precision of 10% it is necessary between 100 and 700 measurements. lt was conclude that, the measurement of Vernier acuity does not provide any advantage for the clinical characterization of amblyopia when it is compared to the traditional visual acuity measurement.
