Keywords in Portuguese
Granitos sintéticos
Isoladores poliméricos do tipo pino
Resinas poliuretanas a base de óleo de mamona

Abstract in English
Unlike other countries, pin-type porcelain insulators are considered traditional in Brazil and are applied on a large scale in electric power distribution lines in a predominantly aerial type configuration. Despite their low cost compared to other components of the electric power distribution network, these insulators have undergone serious unprogrammed shutdowns resulting from problems such as defects in the dielectric material; mechanical breakdown of the upper portion of the insulators caused by dilation strains in the set (thread and pin); and destruction by acts of vandalism. It is therefore considered opportune to engage in studies focusing on alternative insulators. This master's dissertation reports on a study of pin-type polymeric insulators manufactured with castor oil-based polyurethane resins, comparing them with porcelain insulators. This research work discusses the manufacturing process of pin-type polymeic insulators; computerized tomography-based analyses of these insulators carried out to verify the homogeneity of the dielectric material's composition; the results of alternating electric current tests and mechanical flexure tests before and after accelerated aging conduced for 5,000 hours in a Weather Ometer device. The results of the ac current tests demonstrated that aged and unaged electric insulators display the same electrical behavior under alternating electric current, while the mechanical flexure tests revealed that aged insulators possess greater mechanical rigidity.
