Abstract in English
The results obtained from operation of a bench-scale horizontal-flow anaerobic immpbilized sludge (HAIS) reactor fed with synthetic substrate simulating domestic sewage are presented and discussed. The HAIS reactor with a length/diameter (L/D) ratio of 20 is filled with polyurethane foam matriees containing immobilized anaerobic sludge. The reactor performance monitoring included the determination of Chemical oxigen demand (COD), pH, volatile suspended solids (VSS), total volatile a;cids (TVA) and alkalinity (A) in the influent, effluent and intermediate port samples. Hydraulic detention times (HDT) of 10.0, 5.0, 3.3, 2.5 and 2.0 hours were applied in order to obtain the HDT of 2.0 hours in one of the sampling ports. The liquid superficial velocities (Vs) were, respectively, 10, 20, 30, 40 and 50 cm/hr. COD removal efficiencies were higher than 80% after a short transient period (lower than 15 days) following the changes in the óperational conditions. COD values of the sampling portS corresponding to the HDT of 2.0 hours decreased with the increase of Vs, achieving the values of 150, 121, 100, 80 and 73 mgDQO/L. Therefore, mass transfer in the liquid-phase was found to excert a great influence in the substrate removal rate. Such an influence was quantified by determining the liquid-phase mass transfer coefficients (kg) for each Vs applied. The values of ks obtained permitted to express kg as function of Vs for HAIS reactor.
