Abstract in English
Wastewater reuse, through the use of treated wastewater, consists in one of the strategies to increase the availability and conserve water resources, mainly in arid and semi-arid areas. Seeking to contribute with this theme, it was studied a low cost wastewater tertiary treatment with the objective of obtaining effluent that satisfies the guidelines of WHO for agriculture reuse without restrictions. Field experiments were accomplished in Portugal, in a small maturation pond (8 x 3 x 0,5 m) covered with bubble plastic, floating on the water, to heat it up with solar energy by greenhouse effect and to reach time-temperature combinations that facilitate the obtaining effluents with microbiological quality for irrigation reuse. Methodologies were selected for research of helminth eggs in wastewater and in the soil, having been adopted the WHO-A method. This method was improved with the adoption of a sedimentation chamber to facilitate the laboratory work, when samples of treated wastewater are used. The heating system used in Portugal didn't propitiate enough increase in the temperature to reach the whised removal of fecal coliforms for irrigation use. The analysis of the results obtained in the experimental facilities of Portugal, together with the data of another two experiment fields, Tunísia and Jordania, integrated into the same project (AVICENNE), indicates that lhe plastic cover improves the wastewater treatment in maturation ponds, when these reach higher temperatures. The increase temperature and the exposition time to ultraviolet rays, contributed to the removal of fecal coliforms in the maturation ponds.
