Keywords in Portuguese
legislação ambiental
poluição do ar
queimada de cana-de-açúcar

Sugar cane burning effect on the air quality of Araraquara region
Keywords in English

sugar cane burning
Abstract in English
The pollutants realeased into the atmosphere during the sugar cane burnings that happen by the time of agricultural harvesting represent a kind of pollution that needs to be more invesdgated, considering that it effects a great part of São Paulo State inland population. The present work uses data related to pollutant emission during agricultural harvesting in Araraquara neighbourhood, and intends to establish a comparison with environmental legislation. The pollutant concentration data used for this work have been collected by CETESB portable laboratory, analysed and examined in laboratories, and the particulated material - "carvaozinho" - colleted by a system of adhesive plates during the years of 1986 and 1997. A comparison between the values that are found and the parameters established by environmental legislation was done. The results show that the sugar cane burnings are a significative source of pollutant emission into the atmosphere, and that the legal provisions issued in the last years, as well as the rigid application of environmental legislation, proved to be valuable instruments for the air pollution control.
