A ecogestão é a nova palavra de ordem da economia internacional. Para competir no mercado global é necessário que a empresa garanta não só um produto com qualidade, mas também um produto com viabilidade ambiental. A implantação de um Sistema de Gestão Ambiental (SGA), previsto pela Norma ABNT NBR ISO 14001 - "Sistema de gestão ambiental - Especificação e diretrizes para uso e a certificação ambiental decorrente são ferramentas que permitem a organização atingir e controlar sistematicamente o seu nível de performance ambiental. O advento da série de normas ISO 14000 deve ser visto como um instrumento de profundas transformações na relação das companhias com o governo e a sociedade, além de criar novas oportunidades de negócios. Este trabalho coloca em discussão o papel do órgão de controle ambiental do Estado de São Paulo como facilitador na obtenção da certificação ambiental, especialmente importante para a inserção no mercado internacional do setor de celulose e papel. Com relação a certificação pela ISO 14000, foi utilizado um questionário a fim de pesquisar como a indústria e o órgão de controle ambiental estão visualizando seus papéis neste contexto. O resultado mostra que, para ambos, o momento é de definição e consolidação de novas estratégias e atitudes em relação ao meio ambiente

Industrial eco-management is the new trend in the international arena. To compete in the global market, it is not only necessary that a company offers good quality products, but aiso a product with environmental feasibility. The set up of an Environmental Management System, foreseen by the ABNT NBR ISO 14001 standard Environmental management system - Specifications with guidance for use and the consequent certification are some of the tools that allow the organization to reach and, systematically, control its environmental performance. The coming of ISO 14000 series of standards must be seen as an instrument of deep transformations in the relationship between companies, government and society. Besides, it creates new business opportunities. This monograph discusses the role of the environmental control agency of the State of São Paulo as a facilitator in the environmental certification earning process, which is of special importance for the international marketing of pulp and paper products. Regarding the ISO 14000 certification, a simple questionaire was used to survey what the industry and the control agency are expecting from each other. The result shows that for both - industries and the agency - this is a moment of definitions and consolidation of new strategies and attitudes regarding the environment.
