Este trabalho tem como objetivo analisar as manifestações pela conservação da natureza no Brasil, no período entre 1784 e 1958. São apresentadas as idéias que contribuíram para a formação de novas atitudes em relação à natureza no país e os expoentes que se destacaram quanto às suas formulações relativas a posturas e propostas conservacionistas, em especial no âmbito das ciências naturais. Busca-se indicar, ainda, como se construiu um modo de olhar a natureza brasílica, iniciando-se com os relatos dos cronistas desde o século XVI até os estudos embasados no cientificismo iluminista que, a partir do século XVIII, foram desenvolvidos por naturalistas brasileiros e estrangeiros. Além disso, são explicitadas as origens e as ressonâncias do pensamento conservacionista em suas manifestações internacionais mais importantes

This thesis aims to analyse the manifestations for the conservation of nature in Brazil which ocurred between 1784 and 1958. Toe ideas that contributed to the formation of new attitudes towards nature in the country, and the major exponents and their formulations concerning conservationism proposals and postures, especially in natural sciences, are presented here. The way a look at Brazilian nature has been built is also exposed, from the chroniclers' reports in the 16th century to the studies based on the scientific ideal of the Illuminism, carried out by Brazilian and foreign naturalists starting from the 18th century. Besides, the origins and resonances of conservationism through in its most important international manifestations are expressed.
