Abstract in English
This thesis analyzes and evaluates sugarcane agroecosystems, taking both the environmental implications and the use of natural resources as production factors into account. The costs are estimated in financial and energetic measures, since the implantation of the culture until the delivery of the cane to the mill. In order to perform the basic model, a business group that presently represents the paradigm in Brazil was selected, and ffom that data, scenarios of financial and energetic costs of altemative production systems were structured. The environmental aspects were then evaluated as production factors and also included in the tables. Using the costs and the energetic tables, combined with the environmental implication data of the agroecosystems, three scenarios were established. The basic scenario takes the comercial energy utilized into account, and the environment is not considered as part of the production. In the second scenario the environmental impacts and the use of natural resources are estimated as production factors and therefore they involye costs. The third scenario simulates a situation where the agroecosystem is planned to be sustained and the environmental damages are minimized. The results indicated higher costs for the scenarios of inserting environmental costs than for the others scenarios. They also indicated that it is possible to achieve a profitable production in a sustainable ecosystem, as well as that the differences of the energy amount among the systems remain still small, and that the sustainable perspective will only be attractive if it is based upon the social defmition of higher values to the natural environment.
