Os artigos 2º e 3º do Código Florestal tratam das Florestas de Preservação Permanente, ou seja, vegetações que devem permanecer intocadas, salvo exceções legais ( § 1º do art. 3º). As Florestas de Preservação Permanente são de extrema importânciapara a proteção física dos solos contra a erosão e inundações, proteção dos mananciais regulando a vazão fluvial bem como a qualidade da água, manifestação da biodiversidade, etc. Devido às importantes funções destinadas a este tipo vegetação, opresente trabalho propõe-se identificar, analisar e quantificar as Florestas de Preservação Permanente em uma área localizada no município de Campinas - SP, verificando se a legislação vigente em relação as Áreas de Preservação Permanente estásendo respeitada. Para este estudo, foram utilizadas diferentes escalas de trabalho: escala simplificada e detalhada, utilizando para isso, dados de imagens orbitais Landsat (simplificada) e Spot (detalhada). A geração das representaçõescartográficas, as sobreposições dos cenários, as comparações e os cálculos das respectivas Áreas de Preservação Permanente foram realizadas no sistema de informação geográfica Idrisi for Windows versão 2.0. O uso da tecnologia do sensoriamentoremoto combinada ao SIG Idrisi proporcionou a elaboração dos mapas temáticos da cobertura e uso do solo da área estudada, bem como da aplicação sobre estes da legislação ambiental referente as Áreas de Preservação Permanente, possibilitando descrever desta forma a situação em que se encontra a área de estudo quanto a cobertura e o uso do seu solo

The 2nd and 3rd articles of the Forestal Code deals with the Forests of Permanent Preservation, that is, vegetation which must remain untouchable, unless in legal exceptions ( § 1st of the 3rd article). The Forests of Permanent Preservation areextremely important for the phisical protection of the soil against erosion and overflowing, protection of fountainheads adjusting the fluvial discharge as well as the water quality, the bio-diversity, etc. Due to the important functionsdetermined for this kind of vegetation, this study is meant to identify, analyse and quantify these forests in an area located in the city of Campinas-SP, finding out if the law in vigour related to the Areas of Pemanent Presevation is beingrespected. For this study, different scales were used: simplified and detailed scales, using in this case, data from orbital images Landsat and Spot. The creation of cartographic figuration, the superposition of the sceneries, the comparison andthe calculation of these Areas of Permanent Preservation were accomplished in the geografic information system Idrisi for windows version 2.0. The use of the technology of the remote use of sensores combined to the GIS provided the elaborationof the thematic maps of "covering" and use of the soil in the studied area as well as the following of the environmental law on these ones referring to the Areas of Permanent Preservation, making possible to describe, this way how is the area,concerning to the covering and use of the soil
