Abstract in English
The present pace of technology, the rapid diffusion of new products and processes, and the increasing competition in the world market demand the constant reevaluation of the work field of engineers. In order to be able to follow the new scientífic, technological and human developments these professionals must have a solid and comprehensive education, and continuously update their knowledge so as to adequately respond to societys needs. Engineering educatíon and higher education on the whole have an important role to accomplish in society with respect to the present world economic context: in the diffusíon and application of knowledge and technologies, and professional updating of its citizens. Total Quality Management programs may contribute guiding principles and useful tools to universities so as to help them adapt more effectively to these rapid changes and to fulfill their costumer's needs, e.g. students, employers, taxpayers, etc. By encouraginguniversities to reflect on their mission the Total Quality Management programs join in the effort towards the democratization of education and the creation of a more equitable society.
