Qualquer um, em princípio, pode interpretar o contrato social ou o estatuto social - se o intérprete está certo ou não, isto é outra questão -, e os controladores também podem vir a violar o contrato de sociedade. O contratualismo pode ser associado a algo que dá importância para o contrato social ou para o estatuto social enquanto o institucionalismo pode ser associado a algo que não dá relevância para o contrato social ou para o estatuto social e que, supostamente, se preocupa apenas com o interesse público. Parte do problema do institucionalismo é que o negócio de sociedade termina por ser de algum modo enaltecido exageradamente. As sociedades, certamente, têm um impacto muito forte nas vidas das pessoas em geral, porém os aspectos negociais das sociedades não devem ser deixados de lado - eles são a origem das sociedades
