Characterization of marine microbial community under glacial meltwater influence in Admiralty's Bay, Antarctica

Abstract in English
Glacial melting can affect the coastal microbiota through the introduction of sediments, nutrients, organic matter and allochthonous diversity, as well as changes in the structure of the water column and increased turbidity. Due to the temperature increase in the last decades in Antarctic Peninsula, Admiralty Bay's glaciers have gone through a rapid retreat, resulting in the introduction of meltwater in coastal waters. Facing the future scenario of climate change and its effects in the Antarctic Peninsula, this study aims to characterize the microbiota in Admiralty Bay and to evaluate the possible effects of meltwater introduction in pelagic waters in the vicinity of the glaciers. For this, the concentration of photoautotrophic microorganisms and heterotrophic bacteria, as well as the taxonomic diversity of the prokaryotic community, were correlated with physical and nutrient data from the water column during two Antarctic summers. The melting resulted in a thin modified surface layer, of higher temperature and lower salinity, but this had no effect on the microbiota. Higher temperature and lower salinity had a positive effect on the abundance of bacterial cells and phytoplankton through the early summer. The heterotrophic bacteria increased during the summer, represented mainly by groups associated with phytoplankton and organic matter degradation (Bacteroidete / Flavobacteriales, Alphaproteobacteria / Rhodobacterales, SAR11 and Gammaproteobacteria / Nitrincolaceae). The phytoplankton peaked in January and was dominated by the diatom Thalassiosira gravida. Differences between the Bransfield Strait and Admiralty Bay microbiota may have resulted from the introduction of allochthonous diversity in bay waters, which was characterized by the greater abundance of Betaproteobacteria, Alphaproteobacteria, Actinobacteria and Firmicutes.
