The study shows a qualitative field conducted by 21 children and youth cancer survivors that have been supported at a teaching hospital in an inner city in São Paulo state. All the techniques used for data collection were based on interviews and observation and also clinical data obtained from the files. Data were organized around two themes: the experience of illness and the impact on their lives satisfaction. For this study the quality of life has an essential characteristic composed by the dimensions of being, belonging and becoming someone. The experience of illness is the key for the process of survival understanding at this moment. The first theme emerged with the diagnostics and therapeutic processes recollections which participants scored the painful moments of the treatment, but they also scored the positive ones as the socialization and recreation at school. We have observed that the physical and psychosocial consequences of cancer for children and youth are interrelated and reflect at the life quality in order of each type of cancer, age and therapy. The satisfaction with life, as mentioned before, is related with the survivor's ability of having a normal life and an optimistic vision of the future, but plans for the future is totally full of doubts and insecurities. Even dealing with life satisfaction at the moment, some annoying changes at the dimensions of being, belonging and becoming were identified such as physical disability, dissatisfaction with self image, the difficulties on relationship, the social acceptance, school difficulties and feelings of insecurity for the future. Thus, the study results show the uniqueness and diversity of factors that affect the quality of lives of children and adolescents cancer survivors, it is necessary to highlight the needs of having a plan that involves survivors experience, health professional's technical knowledge and family and community support.
